The climate emergency has increased the frequency and intensity of extreme weather that decimates communities. Vulnerable populations, including BIPOC women and gender-diverse people, are often hit hardest and have a harder time recovering from climate disasters. The damage goes far beyond property loss — it disrupts critical services, such as the ability to access healthcare. Lack of access to reproductive health care, in particular, makes it even harder for women and gender-diverse people to face these times of crisis.

Community partners will give away sexual and reproductive health emergency preparedness (SHEP) kits at events across the country this fall. The kits include condoms, emergency contraception, period products, pregnancy tests and lubricant. The kits are being distributed in September during Emergency Preparedness Month to highlight the importance of preparing for sexual and reproductive health disruptions during extreme weather events.

This website compiles our list of SHEP kit requests, but it does not sell the items. Be sure to "claim" an item, so we know how many donations to expect, and then follow our instructions on how or where to get the items. Thank you!

The Center for Biological Diversity has donated our external condoms in the past. They have a campaign called Endangered Species Condoms. This project connects reproductive health to domestic environmental work by addressing the number of people, their associated consumption, our extractive endless growth economy and the climate crisis.

Sexual and reproductive health is inextricably tied to economic justice, racial equity, voting rights, immigrant rights, disability justice, LGBTQIA+ liberation, youth justice, decolonization, environmental and climate justice, democracy reform, gender equality, education, and the right to community safety.

We're hoping to include several internal condoms in each of our SHEP kits at four separate events this year. Help us reach our goal of 200 total internal condoms.

During disasters, STIs tend to spread more rapidly in marginalized communities due to lack of access to care and resources. Despite these realities, sexual and reproductive health concerns are often overlooked in both individual and government emergency preparedness plans. The SHEP kit project bridges this gap by addressing immediate needs while advocating for systemic change.

Each SHEP kit includes several packets of emergency contraception. Severe weather events can limit access to abortions and contraception, making reproductive autonomy more difficult.

Ensuring every person, no matter who they are and where they live, has access to sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice, is foundational to their economic, mental, and physical well-being — especially during extreme weather events.

Help us provide a supply of menstrual products in each SHEP kit. We need tampons, pads, and liners in all sizes.

Over-the-counter birth control

Emergency costs disproportionately affect BIPOC women and gender-diverse people who already deal with complex financial inequalities and hostile healthcare environments.

Help us raise awareness for this issue and fill the needs gap by providing over-the-counter birth control pills at SHEP kit distribution events.

Hurricane Katrina caused disruption in family planning services for people in New Orleans even five to six months after the storm. At that time 40% of people reported they weren’t using birth control, with several people reporting that they experienced unintended pregnancy because they couldn’t access care.

This year, we're hoping to have a supply of 100 pregnancy tests to give out through SHEP kits.

The products and educational material that go into the kits can vary depending on the needs of the community and the way the kits are distributed. Whether individuals are assembling their own kits or receiving them pre-prepared, it's important to make sure the contents are inclusive and meet a wide range of needs.

We'd like to have a supply of non-latex gloves as well as lube packets to include in SHEP kits for anyone who wants them.

Once we have our bulk supplies, we'd love some help putting together SHEP kits ahead of our events. This is a great way to meet other community members and get involved. Reach out via email and we can send you all the details.
